New Cab-bike velomobile

Few posts ago, we have mentioned a polish velomobile. Finally the story is a little bit different, because Maciej Kaczmarek from Poland seems to be only a maker and the velomobile is a new version of Cab-Bike – originaly a german velomobile company which is pretty known in EU as same as in US.

    6000 euros for an ugly ducklin’ like this !? LOL :D
    I wish them good luck,cause they really gonna need lots of it, if they intend to actually sell these!

    Igor, the beauty comes in being able to cycle all-year-around comfortably *and still* carry a weeks’ worth of groceries. CabBike has been around for many years, and while they might not get rich anytime soon, they do a reasonably good job selling CabBikes in Europe. It is nice to see them still in the market and changing their design over time. It means they are thinking!

    And 6000 Euros is nothing compared to spending atleast 3-4 times as much *per year* on fuel and maintenance costs when driving a car/truck/SUV over distances a velomobile is more practical for.

    Hi Jimm :)

    Well, first, regarding the annual costs of a car,
    it really depends on what kind of car and how many miles one does per year.
    I live in Europe, and own a small european car, which mens Lancia Y with 1,2l engine.
    I don not go to work with it, unless it’s freaking cold,
    or is raining cats and dogs.I prefer to bike to work as much as I can.
    But just as an example, let’s say that I do 6 days a week commute in my car throughout the year.
    My commute is 40km round trip, which will translate to about 12.000km in a year, if we don’t count in any other driving, or lack of it because of vacations.
    Fuel costs for 12.000km would be about 766 euros,
    plus about 150 euro for registration and insurance,
    and high cost of servicing a 10 year old car like this is probably about 300 euro per year(repairs included)
    So, we have here about 1200 euros for a year of commuting.
    That’s a lot of money! Woow, that’s a lot of money!!
    Luckily I don’t commute by car most of the time ..
    But for the sake of discussion, let’s say I do, and that I’m thinking of replacing my car with a velo like this.
    Velo is a one person vehicle only, and let’s say that it has enough luggage capacity to carry a week worth of shopping.
    You still can take other people with you, or transport anything bigger then shopping bags, and a range is quite limited,
    as it is human powered, so I can’t exactly sit in it an pedal 1350km in a day to see my girlfriend in another country,
    and I can’t put my mtb on it and just ride few 100’s km to the next wild forest and spend a quiet weekend there.
    So I would still have to keep the car for things like that,
    or be able to borrow.
    Renting is usually not an option if you want to go somewhere further, as it gets really expensive,
    and I doubt it can beat the cost of owning a small car.
    Velomobile also does not work with trains, as the train companies would not accept it as a bicycle,
    but i guess they would in a car-trains during the vacation season, and charge it as a motorcycle at least.
    Again it’s just not working out, so you either have to have a car,
    or leave your velo at home, and take the a folding DF bike with you.
    So the best thing one could do here, is just buy a velo as “supplement” to a car, and do all short trips and commuting with it, which is very possible.
    With that 766 euros per year, it will take 5 years of reduced fuel costs to payback for a velo.
    That’s not even all that bad! But still one has to cash out 6000 at once, which can be though on anyone who is not rich.
    No bank will finance a velo, if it is not a short term credit with high interest.

    All in all, it does make no financial sense to buy a velo.
    The bast one can do, if he need a car, is to own a small one, and commute on a regular non expensive bicycle as much as possible,
    and use a car only for bad weather and/or long distances which are out of reach for a bike.

    Now, imagine that that velo is very sexy looking, and that no one is going to laugh out his guts when they see you rolling in such a contraption,
    and imagine that that velo has e-assistance to help you keep up with traffic, and extend your range with at least 200km on one charge,
    then YES, a lot of people could actually jump in and buy a velo!
    As it will be more useful, and let’s face it, people like nice looking things,
    so that fact alone can make them forget about all other problems that they might encounter with a velo,
    and really ditch the gas burning monster forever.

    But if you come from the USA, and have a gas guzzling SUV monster
    then the calculation would be totally different, of course.
    Not to mention higher income, and that everything else you get much much cheaper the Europeans,
    so living costs can actually be smaller.

    All in all, for the most Europeans buying a 6000 euro velomobile is out of the question,
    unless one is a dedicated car-free person, and is looking for a bit more comfort/speed/range from a HPV,
    and can live with the price.
    As a car alternative, especially in colder parts of Europe,
    one could sure justify the price.
    But still, there would be a lot more converts of the thing was appealing to the eye, even if the price is as it is.

    Just don’t get me wrong, I’m all into velos, but I just can see myself paying that much money for something that is simply ugly,
    and not to mention it’s pretty lousy aerodynamics.
